Today, most states appropriate the term “republic” as a title for themselves. These titles include democratic republic, federal republic, socialist republic, Islamic republic and many more. Unlike the democratic republic, a socialist republic is based on Marxism idea of the dictatorship of the proletariat and an Islamic republic is based on Islamist ideology.

Similarly, most of the global south republics are just nominal republics; in essence, they are authoritarian regimes.
